The Net2 Range
Paxton Access manufacture an advanced PC based access control system called Net2. This system gives you control over who has access to your building. You can control access across hundreds of floors for up to 10,000 users, in a logical and intuitive way.
Sounds expensive doesn’t it? Well, Net2 is actually one of the most economical access systems available in the market. There are no hidden costs such as ‘per seat’ licences, as the software can be loaded onto all of the PC’s in a building if you so wished.
All of the features that most organisations require is actually free with the standard version of the software.
We’ve used the term ‘future-proof’ in other articles on our website, and it’s also applicable to the Net2 system. Adding doors in your building when you need to is easy and cost effective. Additionally, Paxton Access have ensured that all new innovations are designed to be backward compatible, and software upgrades are free.
The software gives you full control over the system from your desk. Any instructions given to the software are immediately relayed to all of the doors that have been set. Adding additional users, barring users, and changing users access permissions are completed quickly and easily from the PC.
If you have several buildings, you can control access to them from just one location across your existing networks via TCP/ IP.
Access permissions can be set by individual or by department, and you can also control access according to shift patterns in various departments.
An events screen allows you to view real-time events. You can monitor who is where within the building, and can also see if a door has been left propped open, or if a door has been forced.
Net2 systems can be operated by a choice of Proximity hands-free, Cardlock and Touchlock keypads. Some third party readers are also compatible, including biometric readers.
All of these things are the essentials of a good, reliable PC based access control system. With Net2 you gain even more functionality:
- Intruder alarm integration - nominate those who have permission to set and un-set the intruder alarm. When they present their token to the door, the alarm will un-set prior to the door unlocking. If the alarm is set, only the nominated people will be able to access the building. This feature aides the prevention of false alarms.
- SMS/ Email messaging via easy to use ‘Triggers and Action’ function. Net2 will send you an SMS or email when a specified trigger occurs. This function allows you to get a message if your door is forced...and will make you unpopular if you set a trigger to notify you when staff are late for work!
- View IP camera images - see who is at the door before you let them in. View the goings-on in your building.
- Control lighting and heating. The ‘Triggers and Action’ functionality allows you to turn lights on when you arrive at the building, and turn them off when the alarm is set at night.
- Hands-free: access control that enables any Net2 door equipped with P series Proximity readers to achieve hands free ranges of up to 2.5 m. By simply wiring a hands free interface between the door and control unit, doors are converted to hands free. Any users who require hands free access are then supplied with a hands free token.

Net2 is a PC based security system that controls access through doors. It also allows users to be given access to particular areas at certain times. The system is networked, so all of the administration can be done from a central point.
Net2 Classic:
Net2 Classic is one of the three Net2 control units available. It is a single door access control unit and it can be connected to others via a network.
The Net2 Classic control units are connected via a dedicated ‘daisy chain’ RS485 network. The units communicate with the server PC through a USB or serial communication converter, or across a computer network using a Net2 plus control unit, or an Ethernet interface. The server PC can be connected at any point along the RS485 data line.
As with the other control units in the Net2 range, the Net2 Classic is designed to work smoothly should there be a communications failure. It will continue to allow or deny access to users as appropriate. One communications are up and running again, the activity will be reported back to the PC.
Net2 Nano:
Next in the Net2 range is the Net2 Nano. This control unit communicates with Net2 software at a central point via a secure, low power radio link. This makes for a cost effective installation, and is less disruptive as cable is not needed to communicate between doors. Additionally, Net2 Nano benefits from unique ease of installation and configuration.
Only one Net2 Nano is needed to control a single door, gate or barrier. It can also be installed with the other access control units in the Net2 range.
Net2 Plus:
Net2 Plus is the most advanced of the three control units in the Net2 range of products. It employs the latest technology, offers great potential for future expansion, and will be able to take full advantage of developing security technology. Net2 Plus is a future proof and safe investment.
Net2 Plus benefits from on-board TCP/ IP, allowing a direct connection to a computer network. This saves time and money, and offers a more resilient system. Net2 Plus units can be connected together through a dedicated RS485 network; reducing the number of TCP/ IP network points usually required for larger systems.
